The EAVF General Assembly, originally scheduled to take place in Pontremoli on 23 October, will be held exclusively online by a video conference in compliance with the new rules provided by the Italian government on 18 October 2020. The event will thus take place via a Zoom platform on 14.30 – 18.00.

On Friday morning 23 October on 10.00 -12.30 the Municipality of Pontremoli in collaboration with the Tuscany Region organises a conference “A walk in the time of Covid-19“, which features Massimo Tedeschi, the EAVF President.

The stages in the area of Vercelli and Pavia between Vercelli and Robbio suffered major damage following the floods of the past few weeks. Now, the two sections have been repaired and can be walked through again, thanks to the valuable work of volunteers.

Vercelli – Palestro section: after the restoration of the Crocetto bridge, the section is once again fully accessible.

Palestro – Vercelli section: the Giuliano Bridge has been restored; however, the river level remains high. To avoid dangerous situations, it is therefore advisable to pass from Rossano to Rivoltella and thus avoid the bridge crossing.

We hope that the situation will completely recover during the next few weeks. We thank all the volunteers for their help.

The extension of the Via Francigena in the South has been selected to compete for an award “Destination of Sustainable Cultural Tourism 2020” in the category Maritime, Coastal and Aquatic Heritage.

Via Francigena in the South, in major parts running across coastal lines of the Tyrrhenian, Adriatic and Ionian seas presents an excellent example of regional cooperation and sustainable use of cultural resources to promote ethical tourism and foster economic growth.

The extension of the route is a result of a cooperation between southern regions in partnership with the EAVF, in consultations with the Italian Ministry of Culture and the European Institute of Cultural Routes. This route was officially approved by the EAVF General Assembly on 18 October 2019. The route management is ever evolving to respond to pilgrims’ needs in terms of infrastructure and hospitality services. An official guide of the Via Francigena in the South will be available to public in the end of 2021.

Rich in culture and nature, blue bays and sunny beaches, breath-taking landscapes and fantastic gastronomy, the Via Francigena of the South is a blueprint of a long-distance thematic route, greatly contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

“Destination of Sustainable Cultural Tourism Awards” is managed by the European Cultural Tourism Network (ECTN). The ECTN is the only pan-European network for Cultural Tourism Development and promotion, uniting 19 countries and 6 associated Member-States. The Award enhances the visibility of European cultural tourism destinations, creates a platform for sharing experience and knowledge.

The Jury is comprised by Europa Nostra, European Travel Commission, NECSTouR, as well as European Commission Directorate-General of Education and Culture and others. The Awards ceremony will be held online on 22 October 2020.

The Via Francigena has already won this award in the category “Transnational Thematic Tourism Products including Cultural Routes” in 2019.

Via Francigena is a finalist of the Cultural Brands Award 2020 in a category European Cultural Tourism Region of the Year 2020.

The award praises innovative cultural management, trend-setting cultural marketing and sustainable cultural promotion. The prize, launched in 2006 by Causales, is now considered Europe’s most advanced cultural prize, which honours forward-looking cultural projects in eight competition categories.

This year 112 applicants from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Lithuania, Belgium, Norway, Italy, England, Portugal, Ukraine, and the Netherlands applied to the award.

The Via Francigena among other 42 finalists was selected by the Jury to compete for the Grand Prix together with a project “Countrysiding Portugal” (PRT) and Le Voyage à Nantes (F) in the category Cultural Tourism Region.

The Via Francigena, European cultural route, which crosses 16 regions in England, France, Switzerland and Italy, is praised for its sustainable tourism development. The route, building on authentic experience, slow travel and cultural discovery, represents an outstanding example of a sustainable cultural brand.

The award ceremony will take place at the “Night of Cultural Brands” gala on 26 November 2020 in the Nikolaisaal Potsdam in front of 750 invited guests from business, culture, politics and media sectors. Michelle Müntefering, Minister of State for International Cultural Policy at the Federal Foreign Office, will open the event.
