The Commune is part of the Comunità Montana Dora Baltea Canavesana. The name Borgofranco d’Ivrea takes origins from the words borgo and franco; in this case, franco means “free”, dispensed with taxes. The municipality is part of the Comunità Montana Dora Baltea Canavesana (mountain community Dora Baltea Canavesana) and it covers an overall area of 13,34 km².

It is located in an important road junction, between Piedmont and Aosta Valley, along the direction towards France and Swiss. The “Birreria De Giacomi”, a brewery of the last century, the building which was the seat of the hydrotherapeutic plant and Marini Palace are the three most important constructions of Borgofranco d’Ivrea. Moreover, also the balmetti are really famous: inside these constructions there are the cellars which exploit the airstreams coming from the ground.
