The Sanctuary Church of San Giovenale, poorly preserved today, is located at Km 49 of the Via Cassia, about one km from the town of Sutri. The history of its foundation is shrouded in mystery, but it is believed to be a new dedication of a pre-existing small basilica devoted to San Felice around 900 AD. At least two construction phases can be identified in the plan: the single-nave building was half dug into the tuffaceous wall of the hill and the other half built externally. The object of worship, depicting Saint Juvenal clothed in the sacred episcopal vestments, was placed in the north wall of the church.
