The Church of San Valeriano, founded in the early 11th century by the da Besate family from Lomellina, was part of a monumental complex that included a monastery, baptistery and bell tower. As a dependent priory of the Benedictine Abbey of Cluny, and due to its location along the Via Francigena, the church played an important role and offered hospitality to pilgrims travelling to Rome. However, from the 14th century onwards, a progressive decline began for the complex, which led it to detach itself from Cluny and pass into the lay ownership of the Ajazza family of Vercelli, who neglected its upkeep. Transformed into a farm building, it was only in 1967, after years of neglect, that the owners of the building donated the property to the parish church, which was able to begin restoration work, which was completed in the early 2000s, allowing what remains of the ancient monastic complex to be preserved.
