Basilica of San Lorenzo Martire

The Basilica of San Lorenzo, built towards the end of the 14th century by Bartolino da Novara, has a Gothic-style terracotta façade and contains numerous works of art. Upon entering, on the right, there is a 15th-century fresco depicting the Virgin and Child, which has always been an object of great devotion for the people of Mortaresi. Continuing on, in the first chapel is the ‘Madonna of the Rosary’, a panel painting by Bernardino Lanino in 1578, celebrating the miracle performed by the Virgin during the Battle of Lepanto. While the second chapel houses an altarpiece by Giovanni Battista Crespi, known as Il Cerano, dated 1610 and depicting the Crucifixion. The protagonist of the left aisle, on the other hand, is Lorenzo da Mortara‘s wooden nativity scene from the early 15th century. Originally composed of over eighty figures, many of which were stolen, the work depicts episodes from the life of Joseph and is one of the most important expressions of Lombard Renaissance wooden sculpture.
