From Ponte a Rigo, you can follow the hilly alternative route that passes through Proceno and offers beautiful views over the Paglia Valley below. You reach Proceno by crossing the so-called “Gate of Lazio,” which marks the border between Lazio and Tuscany.
This route is longer than the official itinerary but significantly safer as it avoids the traffic on the Via Cassia.
