2018 will be the banner year for marathons along the Italian Via Francigena. Between a strengthened format and some developments, Sigeric’s ancient route will welcome thousands of hikers ready to traverse some of the most evocative legs of the route.

On the 29th April 2018, in the province of Viterbo in Lazio, the second edition of the Lago di Bolsena marathon will take place, a walk of 21 km along the natural trails of the area. Registration is open until the 15th April and until reaching 500 participants.

On the 2th May it will be the European Francigena Marathon‘s turn. Having reached its 6th edition, the 42,195 km marathon along the Via Francigena from Acquapendente to Montefiascone is by now a traditional gathering for many enthusiasts. Last year we reached a record of 2195 participants. As well as the 42 km leg, the event will again offer some alternative routes which are shorter and have more rest-stops. Registration will open online on the 10th January, and close the 10th May 2018 or at the reaching of three thousand participants.

The first marathon for Piedmont hikers will debut in June. The 17th June is indeed the date of the Francigena Val di Susa Marathon, 42 km of history along the routes, white and asphalt roads of the Francigena along the Burdigalense, crossing ancient medieval sites. The event will begin in Avigliana, the city of two lakes, to then reach the Sacra di San Michele, the Certosa di Banda to arrive at the historical centre of Susa, an ancient crossroad of pilgrim routes. Registration opens the 7th January (find the web link here).

After the summer another certain marathon date is the 30th September 2018, the day of the Francigena Tuscany Marathon. After the success of the first edition, the Tuscan Francigena marathon of 42 km will retun to allow thousands of participants to walk from Pietrasanta to Lucca once more. Registration opens the 1st April. At the end of the marathon season, the World Francigena Ultramarathon will be proposed once more, 120 km from Siena to Acquapendente. The date of the event will be established shortly.

It’s time to warm up. The walking marathons await!
