France: total confinement until December 1, 2020
Due to the evolution of the pandemic, a total confinement was introduced from Thursday, 29 October 2020 for a minimum period of 4 weeks, until 1 December 2020.
The measures put in place are restrictive for travel:
- Prohibition to change regions;
- Mandatory exit permit: authorisation to leave the house for 1 hour per day on a maximum distance of 1 km with a compulsory travel certificate (download here https://www.service-public.fr/particuliers/actualites/A14407).

- Hotels, restaurants and bars are closed (except for delivery and pick-up activities).
Travel outside France:
- Borders remain open within the European Union.
- Travel outside Europe is prohibited.
- The external borders of the European Union remain closed, with exceptions for French citizens living abroad who can still enter the territory provided they take a test.

Switzerland
Measures implemented along the Via Francigena in Switzerland:
Canton de Vaud
- Compulsory masks inside and outside in big cities, no mask obligation on a hike.
- All hotels and restaurants remain open.
- Restaurants: 4 people per table and closing at 23:00.
- Groups are limited to 10 people outdoors.
Canton du Valais
- Compulsory masks inside and outside in big cities, no mask obligation on a hike.
- All hotels and restaurants remain open.
- Catering: 4 people per table and closing at 22:00.
- Groups are limited to 10 people outdoors.

We do not advise you to walk the Via Francigena in Switzerland at this time, except outside major urban centres.
