The awaited date with the international “Comuni in Camino” (municipalities on the road) approaches, scheduled for the 26th and 27th January 2018 in Monteriggioni, Tuscany.

The fifth edition has arrived, the meeting will take place in the historical complex of Abbadia a Isola and will focus on the theme “Europe and the Via Francigena: an intercultural dialogue“.

The event, organised by the municipality of Monteriggioni, in collaboration with the European Association of the Vie Francigene (EAVF) and supported by Regione Toscana, will unite the representatives of the four countries crossed by the Francigena, authorities of European institutions and of international organisations, such as the Council of Europe and UNESCO, for a moment of discussion on the progress of the route, its European scope and future projects. 2018 is the European Year of Cultural Heritage and the Via Francigena plays a main part in the promotion of European identity and intercultural dialogue.

The 26th January will be dedicated to the meeting of the Scientific Committee of the European Association of the Vie Francigene with academic representatives and scholars from Spain, France, Switzerland and Italy. The Forum will take place on the 27th January in the historical complex of Abbadia a Isola (Monteriggioni-SI), with a programme rich in activities and experiences which set up at network of institutions, associations and private entities. The event will enable those present to take stock of the progress of the “Francigena Unesco heritage” candidacy and of the plans and visions which involve the countries along the route. The Forum will give voice to the small “great” leading municipalities along the Via Francigena and to the regions responsible for security, signage, maintenance of the route, as well as hospitality and communication. There will also be commentary on the most active territories and a discussion and comparison with other Italian and European routes.

The Via Francigena is also a form of narrative and popularisation. The Forum will offer the opportunity to talk about the second edition of the literary award dedicated to the Francigena “Sulle orme dei pellegrini” (In the footsteps of pilgrims) and of the European Festival of the Vie Francigene. During Saturday the new official app of the Via Francigena (of the Italian and Swiss tracts), as well as the new edition of “Via Francigena and the European Cultural Routes”, the official Via Francigena magazine, Cultural Route of the Council of Europe. The entire event will be broadcast by Radio Francigena.

The complete programme will be published over the next few days.
