If you’re looking for a real pilgrimage in Italy, the Via Francigena is the right choice! But you should choose the right route!
Most of the ‘medieval pilgrim routes’ were following the old Roman roads, which followed the most ‘logical’ routes to Rome. Often these roads have been further transformed over the centuries though, and are major roads today.
For that reason we include only the ‘best parts’ of the Via Francigena in our tours: to let you enjoy the pleasure of walking a pilgrim’s route, but also to relive the experience of the medieval pilgrims, walking through forests and pleasant agricultural landscapes, from abbey to abbey, from village to village, but without the noise of modern traffic!
For those who do not want to walk the whole route we do offer some of the most beautiful stretches: the stages from Lucca to Siena and from Siena to Lake Bolsena. On these tours we stay as close as possible to the ‘original route’, but where necessary we deviate from the main roads – and do include some beautiful extra’s!
A good choice for a first approach is our Siena to Lake Bolsena tour. This part of the Via Francigena is among the most scenic and gives you a great opportunity to discover the beautiful Val d’Orcia, perhaps the quintessential Tuscan landscape.
Of course the emphasis of the tour is to enjoy the walking through this beautiful countryside, but you will also have time to visit the beautiful medieval villages and historic towns along the Via Francigena, as this tour threads together some of the most attractive towns and villages in southern Tuscany and northern Lazio in an eloquent procession.
Luggage transport from hotel to hotel is included.
