The alternative route out of Verrès leads to the small town of Issogne, located on the opposite bank of the Dora river. Here, pilgrims can visit the so-called “Cabinet de Coquilles” (the rooms dedicated to welcoming pilgrims in the Middle Ages, richly decorated with the shells of St. James, symbol of the paths of faith) in the Issogne Castle and enjoy the view of the gigantic representation of Saint Christopher on the façade of the small medieval church of Saint-Solutor in Fleuran. Legend tells that the sight of this image will protect pilgrims on their journey to Rome and the Holy Land. The route crosses the Dora again and rejoins the main route of the Via Francigena.
