The Via Francigena meets in Bari on 18 October 2019 for the EAVF General Assembly

The General Assembly of the European Association of the Via Francigena Ways will take place on Friday 18 October 2019.

This important for the association event will be held in Bari, Apulia - the land of the Via Francigena of the South. It will bring together representatives of the four countries crossed by the European Route of the Via Francigena: England, France, Switzerland and Italy. The leader of Canterbury City Council, Robert Thomas, the starting point of the Via Francigena, will take part in the meeting.

This event represents a very significant historic and symbolic moment for the association and for the Via Francigena. The Assembly, which takes place the week after the international conference “Francigena: Way to Rome, Santiago, Jerusalem” also organized in Apulia in collaboration with the Region and the University of Bari, will discuss and ratify the route from Rome to Brindisi and Santa Maria di Leuca - Via Francigena of the South as a certification extension to the Via Francigena Cultural Route of the Council of Europe.

The General Assembly will start at 15.00 on Friday 18 October 2019 in Pavilion 152 - Apulia Region, Fiera del Levante, Lungomare Starita 4, Bari. Participants’ registration will be on 14.00 – 15.00. The following matters will discussed among the others: the triennial evaluation of the the EAVF’s work by the Council of Europe, update on the feasibility study - framework for the candidacy for the UNESCO World Heritage List, planning and animation of the European stretch, presentation of the Via Francigena route in the South.

The event will be preceded by a guided tour of the historic center of Bari scheduled on Friday morning 18 October and a public meeting dedicated to the Via Francigena of the South organized by the Apulia Region in the Aula Magna of the University (Sala Affreschi - Piazza Umberto I No. 26, Bari). Saturday, 19 October will be dedicated to discovery of the Via Francigena on a 5 km hike from Polignano to Cala Incina.
