Via Francigena. The Road to Rome

Via Francigena in the South - Finalist of a prestigious cultural award

The extension of the Via Francigena in the South has been selected to compete for an award “Destination of Sustainable Cultural Tourism 2020” in the category Maritime, Coastal and Aquatic Heritage.

Via Francigena in the South, in major parts running across coastal lines of the Tyrrhenian, Adriatic and Ionian seas presents an excellent example of regional cooperation and sustainable use of cultural resources to promote ethical tourism and foster economic growth.

The extension of the route is a result of a cooperation between southern regions in partnership with the EAVF, in consultations with the Italian Ministry of Culture and the European Institute of Cultural Routes. This route was officially approved by the EAVF General Assembly on 18 October 2019. The route management is ever evolving to respond to pilgrims’ needs in terms of infrastructure and hospitality services. An official guide of the Via Francigena in the South will be available to public in the end of 2021.

Rich in culture and nature, blue bays and sunny beaches, breath-taking landscapes and fantastic gastronomy, the Via Francigena of the South is a blueprint of a long-distance thematic route, greatly contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

Destination of Sustainable Cultural Tourism Awards” is managed by the European Cultural Tourism Network (ECTN). The ECTN is the only pan-European network for Cultural Tourism Development and promotion, uniting 19 countries and 6 associated Member-States.
