Via Francigena. The Road to Rome

The first official guide of the Via Francigena from Canterbury to the Grand Saint Bernard Pass

The first official guide of the Sigeric’s route from Canterbury to the Grand Saint Bernard Pass with a total of 1,200 km is on sale now. The guide, written by an author Julien Moulin from Vollèges (Valais, CH), is published by the Lausanne-based publisher Favre.

This new publication was born from the cooperation of the European Association of the Via Francigena EAVF, carrier network of the Via Francigena cultural route, and the local authorities crossed by the route. For this project the EAVF worked closely with French Hikers’ Federation FFR (Fédération Française de la Randonnée), which provided information on Via Francigena stages in France; the French departments of Doubs, Haute-Saône, Haute-Marne, Marne, Aube, the Communauté d'Agglomeration Grand Besançon and the Swiss Bas-Valais region.

The guide is currently available in French language, while English and Italian versions will follow shortly. The route is based on the North Downs Way in England, the GR145 of the French Hikers’ Federation merged with the historic route of Sigeric in France and Route 70 in Switzerland. The edition is complementary to the already existing guide of the Italian section, thus completing the entire Canterbury to Rome route.

The guide allows walkers, pilgrims and hikers to discover the beauty of the European route and get to know rural areas, offering environmental, historic, architectural and artistic experiences and traditions.

A thousand and two hundred kilometers through European history and landscape "bridge cultures between Anglo-Saxon and Latin Europe" as said by the great French medievalist Jacques Le Goff.

The new guide is available at the EAVF offices in Champlitte FR, Fidenza IT, Piacenza IT, on the website www.viefrancigene.org and in main bookstores in Switzerland and France, tourist offices and rest stops along the route upon their request.
