New Section of Francigena into Rome Opens

The stretch of the Via Francigena from Campagnano Romano, site of the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sorbo in the Veio Park archaeological area, to the town of Formello, is now open to pilgrims.  It is one of three routes in the "system" of pilgrim itineraries being revaluated by the Lazio Region for the Jubilee this year.  In Formello walkers can visit the restored frescoes of the Palazzo Chigi and stay in the pilgrim hostel. Just 16 kilometres from Rome, it is the last stage on the way to St. Peter’s.

The new section of the Francigena, with its signs and fences ​​of cedar, was inaugurated on Saturday by Monsignor Iacobone, Nicola Zingaretti ,the president of the Lazio Region , the vice president Massimiliano Emery, the CEO of Astral , Antonio Mallamo, and Francesco Rutelli who, since 2007 has worked to make the historic routes into Rome accessible to walkers, on behalf of the Pontifical Council for Culture.
