South Francigena Marathon, the first slow-paced marathon south of Rome

The South Francigena Marathon will debut on the 28th April 2019. The non-competitive walk will take its hikers on the discovery of the Southern Francigena along the section from Velletri to Rome.

The event, organised by Italian Walking Tour Asd and supported by the European Association of Via Francigena Ways (main partner) will be a walk through history in the footsteps of ancient pilgrims. The walk will have three routes and cross two parks: Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani and Parco Archeologico dell’Appia Antica, the second of which has authorised passage to the archaeological site of Villa dei Quintili:

Family marathon: 12 km from Nemi, piazza Umberto I – 9am, arrival at Castel Gandolfo

- Half marathon: 22 km from Velletri, in piazza Cairoli –7:30am, arrival at Castel Gandolfo

Marathon: 42 km from Velletri, piazza Cairoli – 7:30am, arrival at Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella, symbolic site of the ancient Via Appia (final stop).

Traversing the Southern Via Francigena, walking in the footsteps of thousands of years of communities of varying cultures, means following history, discovering a territory rich in natural and artistic beauty which makes up the historic and cultural heritage that the whole world envies.
