The Pilgrim's Credential

Buy the Credential with the official guide

The Credential, along with the Testimonium, is the fundamental document of the pilgrim. It represents the “pilgrim’s passport”, certifying identity and motives of the walker. The pilgrim must always have it in order to be identified as such and to gain access to accommodating facilities located along the itinerary. He/She will get a stamp in every location where he/she stays or pass (turist offices, churches, hostels, ...), until the conclusion of the walk. Many facilities host pilgrims with the credential and only ask for a simple donation, to support management costs; or else, in case of buildings that offer more services, it is usually applied a discount (check the section Where to sleep).  The Credential

For people who are travelling the last 100 km by foot or 200 km by bike, the Credential allows to receive the certificate of pilgrimage (check the section Testimonium)

See the Pilgrim Code of Ethics

Starting from April 2017, the Credential released by the European Association of the Vie Francigene grants a series of additional benefits to pilgrims:

  1. Thanks to the agreement with Trenitalia, by showing the Credential to agreed upon ticket offices, it is possible to have a 10% discount on the price of regional train tickets. For more information, see the dedicated page
  2. A discount on the prices is applied in many restaurants and bars along the path. Read where.
  3. People who buy the Credential together with the official guide of the Via Francigena will get them both for a special price. Read the details.
  4. People who buy the Credential on our website (up to 3 Credentials in the same shipping) will get a favourable postage rate.

The sale of the Credential supports the activities of the European Association of the Vie Francigene and of partner Associations of the Via Francigena. Read how.
